Letters of British architects, 1793-1921.

The collection includes 80 letters, 3 prints and 1 seat diagram for the 1907 RIBA annual dinner. The letters were written by 34 British architects between 1793 and 1921, most of them from the second half of the 19th century. The letters address a large variety of subjects, from appointments and excuses to information about work in progress, plans for the future, lectures and courses, considerations about architectural design and criticism. Among the most significant are the letters signed by Alfred Ainger (1), George Frederick Bodley (4), Arthur Thomas Bolton (1), Charles Robert Cockerell (2), Nockalls Johnson Cottingham (2), Owen Carter Jones (7), Sir George Gilbert Scott (8), Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (1), Sydney Smirke (6), Sir John Soane (7), Sir William Tite (6), and James Wyatt (3). John Soane's letters are accompanied by three prints: his portrait engraved by T. Blood after a painting by S. Drummond; the elevation of Soane's house in Lincolns Inn Fields; and the New Treasury, Whitehall, engraved by M. Fox after a drawing by Thomas H. Shepherd.
